How to make fruit compote

In the great world of home preserves, there is an often underrated but incredibly delicious and healthy preparation: fruit compote. Compared to traditional jams and preserves, fruit compote has a larger amount of fruit and a reduced amount of sugar. Ideal for diabetics, and absolutely for anyone and everyone who wishes to limit their intake of sweet foods, fruit compote can even be prepared without sugar.

For this very reason it has a shorter shelf life than other preserves, but this does not affect its goodness and especially its versatility.

You can use it inside tarts, for example, or to fill treats and cakes. The result will always be pleasing to the palate and great for our health.

In our in-depth review we will also suggest two recipes for you to try right away, which are light, delicious and suitable for so many preparations.

Fruit compote, jam and marmalade, what are the differences?

As anticipated, fruit compote has a reduced, if any, amount of sugar. Basically, the compote is sweetened only with the sugars naturally contained in the fruit, with no (or really minimal) external additions.

To give you an example of the proportions of the ingredients, you can find some on the market that have been prepared with 110 grams of fruit per 100 grams of product. So you can get up to 100% fruit used.

Jams and marmalades

But when it comes to the differences with jam and marmalade, things certainly do not end there. As you may know, it was the European Union itself that drew up the rules for the proper definition of each food category.

Jam is a gelled product made from the sugars, water and pulp (or puree) of a single quality of fruit. Or of two or more species of fruit.

Jam, on the other hand, can oanly be called such if water, sugar and pulp of citrus fruits and only citrus fruits (orange, lemon, tangerine, citron, bergamot and so on) are used.

How to make fruit compote

  • Always choose very ripe and very sweet fruits.
  • Wash the fruit thoroughly, peel it and remove the seeds.
  • Cook the fruit (with or without sugar) on a low flame for 30-45 minutes, until it is completely creamy.
  • If you wish, you can blend it.
  • If you consume it right away, let it cool and then use it as you see fit.
  • Otherwise, transfer it while boiling to sterilized glass jars. Close them immediately and place them upside down for 48 hours. Store in a dark, cool, dry place for up to 3 months. Once opened, however, consume in a very short time.

Fruit compote: how to consume it while dieting
Because of its low sugar content, compote is particularly suitable during diets. Very simple to prepare, it is a very versatile idea to vary your menu every day. Try it spread on bread at breakfast or snack time.

Use it to garnish light desserts, taste it, in small quantities, together with cheeses. In the evening, offer it as a snack. And if you have a craving for dessert during the day, compote is a great way to treat yourself. Best with some whole grain bread and maybe some creamy oleaginous fruit (almonds or peanuts, for example).
