What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager is a tool for managing tags on websites and easily adding tracking codes. Tags are snippets of code used to track your website’s performance, perform analytics or track marketing campaigns.

Google Tag Manager provides a great convenience to website owners and marketers. Traditionally, adding tags to a website required changing the website’s code each time. However, this method can be time-consuming and error-prone. Google Tag Manager is a solution developed to solve this problem.

Google Tag Manager allows you to add tags without changing the website’s code. Instead, you create and manage tags once in Google Tag Manager. Then, Google Tag Manager provides you with a tracking code. You add this tracking code to every page of your website. You can then manage the tags through the Google Tag Manager interface.

Advantages of Google Tag Manager:

Google Tag Manager has a user-friendly interface and allows you to easily create and manage tags.
Fast tag management: Managing tags in one place makes website management fast and easy. If you need to make any changes, you can edit from the Google Tag Manager interface instead of changing the code.

  • Google Tag Manager supports various tag types. You can easily add tags from popular marketing tools like Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook Pixel, etc.

How to Use Google Tag Manager

The use of Google Tag Manager can vary depending on website structure and needs. If you have complex tags or special requirements, you can learn more by reviewing Google Tag Manager’s documentation and resources.

Create a Google Tag Manager account:

  • To use Google Tag Manager, you must have a Google account.
  • Then, go to the Google Tag Manager website (https://tagmanager.google.com/) and sign in with your Google account.
  • The first time you log in, you may need to create an account or access an existing account.

Create a new tag container:

  • Once you are logged in to Google Tag Manager, you need to create a new tag container. A tag container is a structure used to group your tags.
  • Click on the “Create New Container” button and give your container a name. Next, enter the URL of the website and select the container type (Web, AMP or iOS/Android app). The container you create will provide you with a tracking code. You need to add this code to every page of your website.

Adding tags:

  • Once you have created your container, go to the “Tags” tab to add tags.
  • Click on the “Create New Tag” button and create your tag. Select the type of tag (Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook Pixel, etc.) and make the necessary settings.
  • Once you have created the tag, go to the “Triggers” tab to specify on which pages you want it to be active. For example, if you want the tag to work on all pages, you can select the “All Pages” trigger.

Preview and publish:

  • After adding the tags, you can check that the tags are working correctly by clicking on the “Preview” button. In preview mode, you can see if the tags are activated when visiting your website.
  • Once you are sure that the tags are working correctly, you can make the changes live by clicking the “Publish” button. Your tags will now be active on your website.

When using Google Tag Manager, you can always go back to your container to edit, delete or add new tags. You can also set user permissions and collaborate to manage your tags.
